On Sunday, Oprah delivered a nearly 10-minute speech so powerful everyone from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to outer space rose to their feet while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes.
Introduced by Reese Witherspoon, who said that Oprah’s hugs were so good they “could end wars” and “solve world peace,” the Queen of All Media gave an impassioned speech that called for truth, equality, and justice. Speaking to a room full of people wearing black dresses and tuxes, Oprah got everyone excited about the future, that new day on the horizon.
After thanking everyone from Steven Spielberg (who directed Oprah in The Color Purple) to forever friend Gayle King to longtime love Stedman Graham (“who’s been my rock”), Oprah touched on the press that “is under siege these days.” She continued, “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories.”
Oprah then told the story of Recy Taylor, a young black woman who was raped by six white men while walking home from church in Abbeville, Alabama in 1944. “They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP, where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted.” Taylor passed away in late December.
As Oprah said in her acceptance speech, “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”
Full transcript below:
Thank you, Reese. In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother’s house in Milwaukee watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for best actor at the 36th Academy Awards. She opened the envelope and said five words that literally made history: “The winner is Sidney Poitier.” Up to the stage came the most elegant man I ever remembered. His tie was white, his skin was black, and he was being celebrated. I’d never seen a black man being celebrated like that. I tried many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl, a kid watching from the cheap seats as my mom came through the door bone tired from cleaning other people’s houses. But all I can do is quote and say that the explanation in Sidney’s performance in “Lilies of The Field”: Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.
In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B. DeMille award right here at the Golden Globes and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award. It is an honor. It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them and also with the incredible men and women who have inspired me, who challenged me, who sustained me and made my journey to this stage possible. Dennis Swanson who took a chance on me for A.M. Chicago. Saw me on the show and said to Steven Spielberg, she’s Sophia in The Color Purple. Gayle who’s been the definition of what a friend is and Stedman who’s been my rock.
I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. We know the press is under siege these days. We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies. I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this. What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry. It’s one that transcends any culture, geography, race, religion, politics, or workplace. So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue.
They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military and there’s someone else, Recy Taylor, a name I know and I think you should know, too. In 1944, Recy Taylor was a young wife and mother walking home from a church service she’d attended in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road coming home from church. They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday. She lived as we all have lived too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.
Their time is up. And I just hope, I just hope that Recy Taylor died knowing that her truth, like the truth of so many other women who were tormented in those years, and even now tormented, goes marching on. It was somewhere in Rosa Parks’ heart almost 11 years later, when she made the decision to stay seated on that bus in Montgomery, and it’s here with every woman who chooses to say, “Me too.” And every man. Every man who chooses to listen.
In my career, what I’ve always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave. To say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere, and how we overcome. I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even during our darkest nights.
So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again. Thank you.
The world might have to wait a little longer to see if 2018 will go down in history as the year Oprah announced her presidential run for 2020. Until then, there’s a lovely speech to hold onto.

Steve Harvey is being sued by a man who claims he was hired by the TV mogul to raise $20 million for the Steve and Marjorie Foundation as well as other ventures and was kicked out after raising the funds..
TMZ Reports: Vincent Dimmock claims he struck a deal with Harvey in April to raise the $20 mil, and in return he says he was promised 12.5% of everything he brought in. Dimmock says in the lawsuit he had access to high-level execs, A-list entertainers and political figures including a former President, and he got pledges for $20 mil.
According to the suit, Dimmock delivered on the first million but Harvey refused to pay him his commission.
Dimmock claims Harvey never intended to pay him and then goes on to make various allegations.
Dimmock says he introduced Harvey to an investor in May, and during their meeting he allegedly disparaged women, blamed Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry for giving him bad financial advice and also blamed Barack Obama for Harvey’s “disastrous meeting with Donald Trump.”
He says Harvey and his foundation were in bad financial shape because of a series of P.R. gaffes, including mocking Asian men and meeting with Trump.
We reached out to Harvey’s agent, Todd Frank, who tells TMZ, “It sounds fake. Steve is the most loyal guy in the world. I’ve never been stiffed on a commission from Steve Harvey in 21 years.”

Shaka was Christian, her husband identified her body. Osaro was Muslim and it was up to her brother to carry out the same task.
The men, both survivors, stand a little apart from the other mourners. Osato’s brother, 18, left home with his sister at the start of the year and spent six nightmarish months in crisis-hit Libya, “where you get shot for nothing”.
The pair then attempted the doomed crossing to Europe.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has come under attacks after addressing his supporters at a polling unit, with activists accusing him of violating the Electoral Act.
The governor’s address constituted a form of campaigning, which the law says must end 24 hours before voting.
“For the purpose of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day. This refers to a registered political party or any person acting on its behalf during the 24 hours before polling day,” the Act reads in section 99 (1 and 2).
The governor cast his vote around 10 a.m. at Eri Primary School, Unit 004, Otuocha 1, Aguleri, Anambra East on Saturday, before speaking to his supporters.
Abiola Akiyode of the Transition Monitoring Group, condemned the governor’s action describing it as a “temptation” the governor should have avoided.
“The most worrisome aspect (of this election) is that the governor came with a microphone to address the people. I think it is a sort of campaign. Since I have been observing, I have never seen any governor go to that extent to talk to people on election day. I think he should have avoided the temptation even if people are pushing him to do something”, she said.
Speaking further, Mrs. Akiyode said the governor’s address is a form of campaign given its content and timing.
“What he spoke about is a sort of campaign. Saying that at the end of the day he would have cause to be happy. I think these are not things one should expect on election day.”
However, the governor was not able to use the card reader at his polling unit as the machine malfunctioned.
To kick off celebrations of his 25th birthday which will be in three days, Singer Davido has gifted his crew members with a brand new iPhone X each.
The singer who is currently in Lebanon for a show shared videos and photos where he celebrated with his team.
Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has said his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will win the ongoing governorship election in the state by a landslide.
Obiano, who is the APGA’s flagbearer in the election, said this after casting his vote.
“I am very confident that at the end of the day, I will carry the day. I will win this election by a landslide.”
Obiano explained that the card reader could not read his fingerprints. But he was able to vote because his voter card was verified by the device.
“My card was verified but they said they couldn’t read my fingerprints,” he said.
It seems the IPOB ”vote and die” slogan has taken a strange turn after black magic was allegedly found at a polling unit.
After threats by Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB to halt the Anambra election failed, it seems they’ve gone spiritual.
The charms were seen at the Ologwu Orie Npor polling unit in Anambra State today with some electorates expressing caution around the materials.
Meanwhile in a press statement released earlier today, IPOB said ”We Will Not Disrupt Anambra State Elections Today, Police Wants To Frame Us”
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, retreated on its threat to disrupt today’s governorship election in Anambra State, saying rather it would stay away from it and will “never participate in any fraudulent election organised by INEC until a date for Biafran referendum is set.”
This was disclosed in two separate statements by its media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, in which the separatists alleged that security agents had planted explosive devices in many parts of the state with a plot to link the development to IPOB.
“IPOB family worldwide under the command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wish to remind the General public that we are not disrupting any election instead directing every Biafran living in Anambra State to boycott the election on Saturday 18 November 2017.”
Claiming that plans had been perfected to rig the polls, he continued:
“We Biafrans have been voting with nothing to show for it till date. In fact, the whole electoral exercise in Nigeria is as fraudulent as Nigeria itself. Nigerian government through the instrumentality of INEC and security operatives especially the Nigerian Army and Police are doing everything possible to undermine the people’s wish in Anambra State election…What obtains in Nigeria is not democracy, electioneering or voting, what we have is a carefully choreographed display of primitively nauseating politics of the jungle.”
“Successful boycott of tomorrow’s (today’s) elections will register our displeasure with South East political slaves and Ohanaeze leadership for their serial betrayal over the years. Political commentators have told us repeatedly to hold our politicians to account, we have therefore selected 18 November 2017 as a perfect date to do exactly that. Today Saturday 18 November 2017 in Anambra State will mark the beginning of a silent revolution that will usher in a new dawn of freedom and accountable governance, not just for Biafrans, but for all the people that make up the component ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
“IPOB cannot participate in an electoral process where Aso Rock, through INEC, simply compile their own figures and declare whoever they like as the winner. Such political banditry will end in Nigeria tomorrow (today),”
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian got married on November 16 in Atlanta, and the news took social media by storm as People were curious to see the dresses Serena wowed in.
Now, VOGUE has published all the photos, including the cover story which tells what happened behind the scene, why they chose the November 16 date, and even the vows the couple exchanged.
On why they chose the date, Serena said it was in memory of Alexis’ mother who passed away nine years ago:
“It is her birthday, and we wanted her to be represented at the wedding. Obviously, we wish that she could be here for this, but choosing her birthday as our wedding date was a nice way of making sure she’s still involved and made us feel more connected to her on our day.”
On choosing her wedding dress, she said she met with Sarah Burton and Alexander McQueen just to make the right choice:
“I flew to London to meet with Sarah and ended up falling in love with the ball gown silhouette, which is completely the opposite of what I ever thought I would choose for myself. I loved the idea of doing a really spectacular ball gown, and it has turned out to be such an incredibly special piece.”
At the event, guests were entertained with a short video that told the couple’s love story. And Serena explains why they did this:
“I wanted the whole thing to be as nontraditional as possible. We did sofas instead of chairs, with everything facing the aisle instead of the altar.”
When it was time to exchange vows, here’s what Alexis reportedly said:
“I will always have bad jokes that make your eyes roll, make you give me the side eye. You are the greatest of all time, not just in sport. I’m talking about as a mother and as a wife. I am so excited to write so many more chapters of our fairy tale together. And my whole life I didn’t even realize it, but I was waiting for this moment. And everything that I have done, everything that I am so proud of in my career, and in my life, for the last 34 years, pales in comparison to what we’re doing today. And I am so grateful, and I am so in love.”

Nigeria on Tuesday 14th November 2017 played against Argentina in an International friendly match.
The match was played at Krasnodar Stadium in Russia.
Alex Iwobi scored twice as Nigeria fought back from 2-0 down against an Argentina side to secure a stunning 4-2 friendly victory in Krasnodar.
Sergio Aguero scored his 36th international goal to move clear in third place on Argentina’s all-time scoring list as Jorge Sampaoli’s side looked set to prosper despite the absence of Messi, who had returned to Barcelona after featuring in the 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday.
Having drawn level with Hernan Crespo by scoring a late winner against the Russians, Aguero followed up his first international goal since June 2016 by tapping home Argentina’s second to back up Ever Banega’s free-kick opener.
Yet their comfortable cushion evaporated either side of the interval, with Kelechi Iheanacho inspiring a Nigeria fightback with a free-kick of his own in the closing stages of the first half.
Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Iwobi and Bryan Idowu swung the game further away from Argentina, with the former then slotting home a fourth to secure Nigeria just their second ever win over their South American opponents.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has spoken to his South African President Jacob Zuma to inform him that he is under house arrest but so far he is doing ok.
The South African presidency said in a statement that Zuma, in his capacity as chair of the Southern African Development Community, was sending special envoys to Zimbabwe to meet with Mugabe and the Zimbabwean Defence Force, which has seized power in Harare.
Zimbabwean army cordoned off the Presidential seat of power and Parliament Building in the capital while helicopters circled the city center, after the military announced it had taken over control of all government institutions.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police was not visible in the streets as soldiers controlled traffic movement while unconfirmed reports say a number of cabinet ministers and some top ruling Zanu-PF officials have been arrested.
In some instances the soldiers were asking for identification from members of the public, although the situation remained peaceful and calm with people going about their daily chores as if nothing dramatic had happened.
The UN has issued a security advisory instructing its personnel to work from home while some schools were closed and some students failed to sit for their final examinations, including at the University of Zimbabwe.
Personnel from the President’s Department have reportedly been removed from the departures desk at the recently renamed Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and replaced by soldiers.
Chief of staff (quarter-master) in the Zimbabwe National Army Sibusiso Moyo appeared on state television early Wednesday morning.
Moyo said that the position taken by the military since the statement made by Zimbabwe Defense Forces commander Constantino Chiwenga Monday had reached “another level.”
“Firstly we wish want to assure the nation that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.
“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice,” he said.
He did not say where President Mugabe was.
Mugabe fired his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa on allegations of seeking to usurp power, in a development that had created tension in the country.
Moyo assured Zimbabweans at home, abroad and the international community that this was not a military takeover and that the situation would soon return to normalcy.
“To both our people and the world beyond our borders we wish to make it abundantly clear that this is not a military takeover of government.
“What the Zimbabwe Defense Forces is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation in our country which if not addressed may result in a violent conflict,” he said.
Leave has been cancelled to all military personnel who were instructed to return to their barracks immediately.
Moyo urged the people to minimise movement but said those going to work and with essential businesses should carry on.
He urged other security sectors to cooperate with the military.
“Let it be clear that we intend to address the human security threat in our country and any provocation shall be met with an appropriate response,” he warned.
State television was playing liberation war songs all early morning, indicating that the military was in charge of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.
Government-controlled newspaper The Herald, which on Tuesday did not run Chiwenga’s statement, was said to be preparing a special edition to be published later on Wednesday.
Moyo said an impending purge of civil servants by some top members of government would be stopped and the judiciary allowed to exercise its role without undue interference.
Live reports coming out from Zimbabwe shows the Zimbabwean army has taken over the State Television station and has blocked off access to all government offices.
Read the Live broadcast by the Army below;
Good morning Zimbabwe.
Fellow Zimbabweans. Following the address we made on 13 November 2017, which we believe our main broadcaster Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation and the Herald were directed not to publicise, the situation in our country has moved to another level.
Firstly we wish to assure our nation, His Excellency, the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe and commander in chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, comrade R G Mugabe and his family, are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.
We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.
To the civil servants, as you are aware there is a plan by the same individuals to influence the current purging which is taking place in the political sphere. To the civil service, we are against that act of injustice and we intend to protect every one of you against that.
To the judiciary, the measures underway are intended to ensure that as an independent arm of the state you are able to exercise your independent authority without fear of being obstructed as has been the case with this group of individuals.
To our members of parliament, your legislative role is of paramount importance, of peace and stability in this country, and it is our desire that a dispensation is created that allows you to serve your respective political constituencies according to democratic tenants.
To the generality of the people of Zimbabwe, we urge you to remain calm and limit unnecessary movement. However, we encourage those who are employed and those with essential business in the city to continue their normal activities as usual. Our wish is that you will enjoy your rights and freedoms and that we return our country to a dispensation that allows for investment, development, and prosperity that we all fought for and for which many of our citizens paid the supreme sacrifice.
To political parties, we urge you to discourage your members from engaging in violent behavior. To the youth, we call upon you to realise that the future of this country is yours. Do not be enticed with the dirty coins of silver, be disciplined and remain committed to the efforts and values of this great nation.
To all churches and religious organizations in Zimbabwe, we call upon your congregations to pray for our country and preach the gospel of love, peace and unity and development. To both our people and the world beyond our borders, we wish to make this abundantly clear this is not a military takeover of government. What the Zimbabwe defence forces is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation in our country which if not addressed may result in violent conflict.
We call upon all the war veterans to play a positive role in ensuring peace, stability, and unity in the country. To members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, all leave is canceled and you are all to return to your barracks with immediate effect.
To the other security forces, we urge you to cooperate for the good of our country. Let it be clear we intend to address the human security threats in our country. Therefore any provocation will be met with an appropriate response.
And to the media, we urge you to report fairly and responsibly.
We thank you.”

She doesn’t pressure me anymore with marriage you know, like its not like I am engaged or married or anything, it’s just that when it happens, it happens. As a woman you cannot marry yourself.
Miss Nelson also spoke about how she met a guy in London, they dated, and he proposed to her, she said yes of course, but then, he wanted her to move to London, but she couldn’t, because “she had nothing doing in the UK”.

But let’s face it: nothing beats owning a private jet.
We can’t all be billionaires and enjoy the perks of our own personal plane, but we can dream. And these photos make dreaming pretty easy.
Here’s a look at the five most high-end and luxurious private jets.
5. The Cessna Citation Longitude can fit up to 12 people and costs $26 million.

It also comes with a spacious bathroom.
Lupita Nyong’o is the latest celebrity to speak out against the publishing industry and their blatant mistreatment of women of color.
More women of color have lately been extremely vocal about their struggles with having their images altered in print publications.
As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too. Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfills me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are beautiful just the way they are. I am disappointed that @graziauk invited me to be on their cover and then edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like. Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women's complexion, hair style and texture. #dtmh
After she posted a collage of her three photos to Instagram, Nyong’o opened up about how her initial cover of Grazia UK was altered without her permission.
‘As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage, and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too,’
Lupita was really frustrated that her natural hair was cropped out in favor of a style closer to ‘traditional beauty standards.’

Lupita’s use of the #dtmh hashtag was a nod to songstress Solange Knowles who recently experienced quite a similar offense. Just last month, Solange called out Evening Standard Magazine for cropping her braid out of the magazine’s cover.
After the magazine posted a picture from her shoot that had quite an elaborate braid sculpture cropped from her head, it didn’t take too long for Solange to speak out and she was backed up by her fans as well.
The non-cropped version of the photo shows Solange’s braids in all their glory.
The irony in this story is that the interview Solange did with the magazine was exactly about how she is feeling comfortable in her own skin and how owning her body this year was crucial to her.
Solange definitely doesn’t seem to want to portray herself in any way other than who she feels she is and who can blame her for this?

Popular Nigerian singer and actor Bankole Wellington aka Banky W has shared details of a rare type of cancer he’s currently battling.
In an Instagram post the singer shared today, he wrote:
A wise man once said this: “Scars. A sign that you had been hurt. A sign that you had been healed.” Scroll through the pictures to see mine.
I’m sharing these because they’re proof of what God has brought me through. And because somewhere out there, I know there’s someone who needs to hear this.
For those who’ve been wondering why I’ve been away so long..I had my 3rd surgery on a rare strain of skin cancer tumours in my shoulder last month. The first 2 times were over 10 yrs ago, then it recently resurfaced. But this isn’t a sad story as much as it is a reminder, and a testimony.
A reminder that you should never take life for granted. You only get 1 shot. Some people went to sleep and never woke up. Many others have lost the battle to cancer and other illnesses. Many are still fighting. U never know when your time will be up so don’t waste another minute. It’s also a testimony about the goodness of God. I think I had to go through this again to remember how merciful God is to me; Lord knows I don’t deserve it but He saves me time and again anyway. I keep saying I need to write a book. I really, really do.
The past few weeks of recovery have been tough, but beautiful. I’m finally back on my feet, feeling stronger and ready to get back to life. I’m especially thankful to my Nurse Susu for loving me and being by my side every step of the way – I don’t deserve U 😍😭, my parents & siblings, in-laws & close friends for the love, support and prayers, my Pastors – Pastor Tony Rapu & Pastor Del Balogun of TPH, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya and Pastor Bayo Adeyokunnu – for constantly praying with and for me. And of course to Dr Wodajo & Dr Miralli & their teams – who God used to operate on me successfully.
I’m thankful for life, provision and healing. Pls dont feel bad, or msg me with any worries.. God has done it, just thank Him for me.
The pain will eventually go away but the scar won’t – and I’m glad because it’s a reminder to me of what God has done, and evidence to you of what He CAN do. I’m not stronger or better than anyone. I’m just a living testimony that no matter what u face, U can survive & thrive, by God’s grace.

Sia posted a paparazzi picture of herself in the nude after learning that someone was trying to sell the image to her fans.
The picture, which includes the watermark of photo agency FameFlyNet and a message offering to “unblur” it for money, was posted on Sia’s Instagram and Twitter on Monday, November 6.
She included the caption: “Someone is apparently trying to sell naked photos of me to my fans. Save your money, here it is for free. Everyday is Christmas!”
The image shows Sia from behind and appears to have been taken on a balcony.
The singer has long been one of the most reclusive stars in show business, routinely wearing large wigs and other accessories to conceal her face during outings in public and performances.
Sia’s reference to Christmas also acts as a nice plug for her new album of original Christmas songs, set for release in time for the holidays.
Don’t mess with Sia!
