Italy has recorded 969 deaths from coronavirus COVID-19 in a single day, the biggest leap since the crisis began last year ending.

According to CNN, the total death toll in Italy stood at 9,154 after 969 deaths were reported on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Despite being in a complete lockdown for almost two weeks, the total number of recorded coronavirus cases in Italy, including deaths and those who recovered, now stands at 86,498.

Since the beginning of the crisis in Italy, 51 doctors who tested positive for the disease have died, the Italian Association of Doctors said Friday.

A total of 6,414 health care workers have been infected as of Thursday, according to the Italian National Institute of Health.

Italy has recorded more coronavirus-related deaths than any other country in the world.
