Wike, who has been trending on Twitter over the cost of the whisky, recently referred to the drink while also bragging about it.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been pictured with former Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose gulping a 40-year-old whisky, Dalmore, which cost a whooping £12,000.

Wike, who has been trending on Twitter over the cost of the whisky, recently referred to the drink while also bragging about it.

In a recent video, Wike while speaking at an event, mocked Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who led protesters to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in protest.

Atiku and Iyorchia Ayu, the immediate past national chairman of the PDP, led other leaders of the party to protest alleged irregularities that marred the conduct of the presidential election.

The country’s main opposition party had asked that results collated from the exercise be cancelled and elections be redone in areas that had problems.

The Rivers governor had referred to Atiku and the party members and other protesters as a “students’ union” chanting “aluta continua”.

“What is in us is greater than what is in them,” the governor said in a mix of English and pidgin.

As they were protesting, I just sat down and I took one 40-year-old whiskey. I called some of my friends ‘o boys, sit down. Make una sit down open 40 years.

“That you have taken over the role of students’ union, aluta continua. That is what the party has become, aluta continua.”

This news of Nyesom Wike wasting such an amount of money on drinks comes a few months after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) disclosed that no fewer than 133 million Nigerians, representing 63 per cent of the population are currently living in multi-dimensional poverty.

Of the total, 105.98 million poor Nigerians are located in rural areas compared to 16.97 million in urban areas. In August 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari committed to empowering an additional 100 million people to escape extreme poverty by 2030. This implied that on average, 10 million people must be lifted out of poverty each year, starting in 2020.

In other news, Kanyi Daily reported that the Sokoto Division of the Court of Appeal on Friday convicted and sentenced two Chinese nationals, Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Kuai, to 6 years imprisonment on two of a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, money laundering and attempted bribery to the tune of N50 Million brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
