“I Was Always At The Bottom Of My Class” – Toke Makinwa Reveals At Her Perfume Launch

Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa has unveiled her unisex perfume collection at RJ4, Victoria Island in Lagos.

The event held on Tuesday night, May 7, was attended by celebrities, family, and friends who came from far and wide to celebrate Toke Makinwa’s success.

During the launch under her label Toke Makinwa Beauty, the media personality paid tribute to her mother, acknowledging her pivotal role in shaping her identity.

Toke Makinwa recounted challenges from her past, including academic struggles where she often found herself at the bottom of her class.

She shared a particularly memorable incident where, in an attempt to manipulate her report card to show improvement, she faced her parents’ disappointment and received punishment instead of praise.

Despite these setbacks, Toke expressed gratitude for her mother’s unwavering support. She recalled how her mother, in moments of despair, would encourage her to persevere, instilling belief in her potential.

She said, “Another incident that shaped my life, I was always at the bottom of my class. There was this time we were like 52 in the class, and I came 52, and a part of me thought I was smart, and I cleaned the 5 and left the 2. I was going home to show my parents that finally, after being bottom of the class, I came second, and when they looked at the report card, they flogged me. She didn’t spare my behind because she was frustrated.

“I remember when I was feeling ashamed and down, this was the same woman who believed in me and would wake me in the night, telling me to read. Mummy, I know I came last in class, but today, Mummy, I launched a perfume line”.

Her mother, visibly moved by her daughter’s achievements, expressed pride and gratitude to God for guiding Toke’s path. She emphasized the divine aspect of their journey, recognizing that her efforts as a parent were not in vain.

“I thank God my efforts were not in vain; it’s the Lord’s doing,” she said.

With emotions running high and memories shared, the launch of Toke Makinwa’s perfume collection not only marked a milestone in her career but also served as a touching tribute to the support and love that shaped her journey.
