The 83-year-old music legend addressed the situation himself in a video shared on Tuesday morning.
Looking lively and full of energy, Ebenezer Obey used a short musical performance to shut down the false claims.
In a mix of Yoruba, English, and Pidgin, he sang: “Hello, my name is Professor Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi. Satan, you don lose o, Satan, you don lose o, you don pafuka. Na lie lie you dey talk, you don pafuka.”
After the song, he reassured fans with a clear message: “It is fake news that started a few hours ago claiming that I, Evangelist Obey, have passed on to glory. It is a lie. I am alive, and that is not the word Jesus has written.”
The fake news started making rounds on Monday, spreading quickly on social media and leading many to post early tributes.
Later that evening, his personal assistant, Tope Olukole, also addressed the death rumor in an interview with TVC.
He emphasized that the music icon is very much alive and had even recently celebrated his second child’s in-law’s 50th birthday.
“Let’s set the record straight: Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi is alive and thriving! He recently celebrated a joyous occasion — the 50th birthday of his second child’s spouse.
“Rumours of his passing are baseless and entirely unfounded. We’re glad to see him active and well,” Olukole said.
The false rumor came just a few weeks after Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi marked his 83rd birthday.
