The Speaker of Anambra State house of Assembly, Rt Hon Rita Maduagwu (Nnewi South II Constituency) has been impeached for a host of alleged misconducts on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.
Maduagwu was impeached by 22 out of 30 members during plenary at the Assembly chamber due to alleged incompetence, gross misconduct, docility, financial impropriety, and high-handedness.
She was impeached following a motion moved by a member of the House, Hon Ikemba Uzoezie (Aguata II Constituency) and seconded by Hon Onyebuchi Offor (Ekwusigo Constituency).
Ikemba Uzoezie, a member of APGA, representing Aguata two state constituency has been announced as the new speaker.
The embattled Speaker, Maduagwu has branded the process that led to her impeachment as “bundle of illegality”.
She referred to the lawmakers that impeached her as ‘rascals’ and maintained that she remains the Speaker. She said:
“Nobody can impeach me because I have not committed any offense. They didn’t have any power known to any law to impeach me.
“They need two-thirds of our members to impeach the Speaker or the governor. So, I’m still the Speaker.”
Maduagwu, who was rallied round by some government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Solo Chukwulobe, regained access to the chamber after about two hours and held a session with 11 members.
She adjourned plenary till Thursday, November 15.
