The Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo has died hours after being honoured by President Muhammadu Buhari.
On Tuesday, Barkindo was received at the State House by President Buhari, who lauded him for his six-year tenure as the OPEC secretary general and described him as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria.
A few hours after the recognition, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, announced that Barkindo died on Tuesday night.
Taking to his Twitter page in the early hours of Wednesday, Kyari wrote: “We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo.
“He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.”
