Nigerian Soldiers Assault UNIBEN Students, Vandalize Cars In ‘Revenge’ Attack [Video]

Nigerian soldiers are taking their revenge on students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) after their colleague was assaulted in the school.

KanyiDaily had reported how UNIBEN students harassed and beat up a Nigerian soldier who assaulted some of their colleagues over cash withdrawal at one of the bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) booths on campus.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Thursday afternoon when a group of soldiers tried to jump the queue at the ATM but was met with stiff resistance by the students who insisted that they must join the line.

The soldiers were said to have assaulted some students during the confrontation, including the institution’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) who tried to make peace in the matter.

The situation immediately escalated and the students assaulted one of the soldiers, before proceeding to barricade the roads and block movement for motorists and travelers till Justice is done for their colleagues.

On Friday morning, in what would seem as a reprisal attack, soldiers were alleged to have jumped the school fence around 2 am, to vandalize several cars of different persons parked inside the school.

The soldiers were also accused of assaulting UNIBEN security personnel and some were seen caught on camera brutalizing students along the school premises.

UNIBEN Reacts As Students Clash With Soldiers

In a statement signed by the Vice Chancellor of the School, Prof. Lilian Salami on Friday, she described the incident as unfortunate and called for an amicable resolution.

The statement reads, “The unfortunate incident of the clash between some students of our university and soldiers on Thursday 2nd February, resulting from alleged resistance of students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM queue on campus has been brought under control and the management of the University is in discussions with the hierarchy of the S&T for amicable resolution.

“The management acknowledges that these are challenging times for everyone and enjoins all to remain calm while efforts are being made to avert a re-occurrence.

“Management also calls on the students to constantly engage dialogue in resolving issues that concern them rather than taking to protests, at any provocation, thereby causing more injury and damage to themselves and other citizens.”
