KanyiDaily recalls that Seun Kuti turned himself to the police on Monday, after the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered his arrest for slapping an officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
On Tuesday, Seun Kuti was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court to face charges of assaulting a police officer, a violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
The police asked the court to remand Kuti for 21 days, but the magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded for 48 hours to allow the police to conclude their investigation.
The court, however, held that the defendant should be admitted to bail in the sum of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand.
The magistrate adjourned the case for mention to May 23 and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for advice.
On Thursday, May 18, police secured an order from a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos to remand the musician for additional four days.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatubosun, extended Kuti’s remand period until May 22.
The application was presented by Mr. Simon Lough (SAN), who led a police legal team to the court. The extension was requested to enable further investigation into the case.
