Super Eagles Invite Ahmed Musa, Osimhem, Others For AFCON 2023 Qualifiers [FULL LIST]

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro has named a 23-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sierra Leone.

The Portuguese manager has called upon several familiar faces, including national team captain, Ahmed Musa and Napoli’s record-breaker Victor Osimhen.

Relegated Leicester duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi have also received invitations, with Iheanacho listed as a midfielder and Ndidi in the attack.

However, Nice’s Terem Moffi did not make the squad despite his impressive performance of scoring 19 goals in all competitions across two French clubs this season.

One of the major talking points revolves around the inclusion of four NPFL players: goalkeepers Victor Sochima from Rivers United and Olorunleke Ojo from Enyimba FC, defender Chidiebube Duru from Rivers United, and midfielder Divine Nwachukwu from Bendel Insurance.

The clash between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will take place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia on Sunday, 18 June, as Sierra Leone currently lacks an approved stadium for international matches.

Super Eagles Squad:

Goalkeepers: Adebayo Adeleye (Hapoel Jerusalem, Israel); Victor Sochima (Rivers United); Olorunleke Ojo (Enyimba FC)

Defenders: William Ekong (Watford FC, England); Calvin Bassey (Ajax FC, The Netherlands); Kevin Akpoguma (TSG Hoffenheim, Germany); Chidiebube Duru (Rivers United); Oluwasemilogo Ajayi (West Bromwich Albion, England); Kenneth Omeruo (CD Leganes, Spain); Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto, Portugal); Bright Osayi-Samuel (Fenerbahce FC, Turkey)

Midfielders: Joseph Ayodele-Aribo (Southampton FC, England); Alex Iwobi (Everton FC, England); Divine Nwachukwu (Bendel Insurance); Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Frank Onyeka (Brentford FC, England)

Forwards: Moses Simon (Nantes FC, France); Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal FC, Spain); Ademola Lookman (Atalanta FC, Italy); Victor Osimhen (SSC Napoli, Italy); Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest, England); Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England); Ahmed Musa (Sivasspor K, Turkey)

Nigeria will first face Sierra Leone in the penultimate Africa Cup of Nations qualifier this month, followed by a match against Sao Tome and Principe in September, marking the final game.

KanyiDaily recalls that the Super Eagles dropped in April’s FIFA rankings, but the Nigerian team was ahead of Ghana and Cameroon.
