Sani’s call is in reaction to the cutting of power supply to the restive West African nation by Nigeria as part of sanctions imposed on the country following a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
Bazoum was removed as president and detained by his elite presidential guard on July 26th in a military wildly condemned by Nigeria, the United Nations, ECOWAS, the United States, France, and other countries.
ECOWAS under Tinubu’s chairmanship has also imposed several sanctions on Niger, including enforcing a no-flight zone over the country. The regional bloc also gave the military junta in the country a one-week ultimatum to restore constitutional order or face possible military intervention.
The ultimatum ends today, Sunday, August 6th, 2023.
Sani in a tweet on his official handle on Sunday, advised the president not to use electricity supply as a weapon against Niger.
He noted that Nigeria should not be the vigilante of imperialism in West Africa.
Sani, who is also the President of the Civil Rights Congress and human rights activist added, “The President should be careful not to be the new apprentice of French neo-Colonialism in our subregion.
“This is a moment we should seize for a new Independent West Africa; beginning with killing the CFA, Cedi, and Naira and adopting a common West African Currency.”
Recall that Sani earlier called on the Nigerian Senate not to approve any military action against the Niger Republic.
Similarly, Kanyi Daily reported that the senate on Saturday, rejected the request by President Tinubu to approve a military action against the Niger Republic.
