NLC Suspends Strike After Tinubu’s Intervention

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday, confirmed that it has suspended its planned strike after President Bola Tinubu and the senate intervened in the impasse.

NLC said the resolution followed the National Executive Council meeting of the congress.

According to the national treasurer, Hakeem Ambali, in a terse message, “Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesternight.”

On Wednesday, NLC held protests across the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, prompting an emergency meeting between the President and the labour leaders.

Reports say the NLC had vowed that it would suspend its strike after the government show some level of seriousness.

Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily reported that angry protesters had on Wednesday, pulled down the gates of the National Assembly in a bid to gain access to the premises to meet with the lawmakers.

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, met with Tinubu and said the president had made some commitments.

In a related development, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has promised to provide N500 million in monthly assistance to poor residents of the state to mitigate the effects of the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy.
