Ayra Starr has been facing backlash over a viral video that shows how she greeted King Sunny Ade and Burna Boy’s mother, Bose Ogulu, at a recent event.
In the video, Ayra Starr who rocked her unusual skimpy outfit initially appeared to ignore Burna Boy’s mother while extending greetings to a woman seated nearby.
Subsequently, the singer shook hands with King Sunny Ade, a gesture that some, including actor Adeniyi Johnson and his wife, Seyi Edun, deemed disrespectful.
The music star later came back and greeted Bose Ogulu properly, but netizens had anticipated a traditional Yoruba gesture of respect, such as bending down, especially considering the significant age and professional gap between Ayra Starr and King Sunny Ade.
Reacting to the backlash trailing her shaking hands with the music veteran, Ayra Starr explained that the overwhelming atmosphere had initially hindered her from properly acknowledging everyone.
The artist claimed that she is not a disrespectful person and emphasized her upbringing as a “proper Yoruba girl.”
Ayra Starr clarified that she circled back to greet everyone appropriately after the initial encounter, expressing regret for any unintended offense caused.
“I’m so sorry, I had just walked in and all the lights and nerves didn’t let me see but I came back around to greet everyone properly, I have never been that girl to be disrespectful, I’m a proper Yoruba girl, and the video didn’t start until after I’d greeted burna’s mom! I’m very sorry to the legend, uncle and King Sunny Ade,” the post reads.
KanyiDaily recalls that French DJ and record producer, David Guetta recently compared Ayra Starr to American popstar, Rihanna.
