The secret police took over the palace on Thursday, May 23, amidst move to dethrone the Emir who took over after Lamido Sanusi was removed by ex-governor, Abdullahi Ganduje
This action follows the passage of the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Law (repeal bill), 2024, by the state assembly earlier that morning.
Newsmen, who visited the palace at around 11 am, observed DSS operatives stationed there.
Although the Emir of Kano was reportedly in Ogun State on a private visit to Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, security personnel were seen at the palace entrance, prepared for any developments.
The new law abolishes all positions created under the repealed law and if Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf signs it, it will become law, potentially leading to the Emir’s removal.
The bill directs the governor to take necessary actions to restore the Kano emirate to its previous status before the repealed law was enacted.
KanyiDaily recalls that Sanusi, who was a vocal critic of Ganduje, was dethroned in 2020 after a conflict with the former governor.
The Ganduje administration also created four new emirates in 2019 under a controversial law to reduce Sanusi’s influence.
However, a new law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly has abolished these four additional emirates and reinstated Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
This new law dethrones Aminu Ado Bayero, who was appointed as Emir of Kano after Sanusi’s removal, and demotes him back to his former district head position.
