Nigerians React To Sanusi’s Reinstatement As Kano Emir After His Dethronement By Ganduje

Nigerians are reacting to the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, after his dethronement by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

KanyiDaily recalls that Sanusi, who was a vocal critic of Ganduje, was dethroned in 2020 after a conflict with the former governor.

The Ganduje administration also created four new emirates in 2019 under a controversial law to reduce Sanusi’s influence.

However, a new law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly has abolished these four additional emirates and reinstated Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

This new law dethrones Aminu Ado Bayero, who was appointed as Emir of Kano after Sanusi’s removal, and demotes him back to his former district head position.

Those dethroned alongside Bayero are the Emir of Bichi and Aminu’s younger brother, Alh. Nasiru Ado Bayero; Emir of Gaya, Alh. Aliyu Abdulkadir; Emir of Karaye, Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim; and Emir of Rano, Kabiru Mohammed Inuwa.

The assembly’s decision repeals the 2019 law that created the new emirates and restores the emirate council to its original status.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is now authorized to take necessary actions to reinstate the traditional Kano Emirate System as it was before the 2019 law.

Many Nigerians on Twitter expressed joy and support for Sanusi’s return, praising the decision to restore him to his position.

However, not all reactions were positive. Some Twitter users criticized the reinstatement, questioning the constant shifts in leadership and the political instability it signifies.

Overall, the reinstatement has sparked a mix of celebration and debate on social media, reflecting the complex political and social dynamics surrounding Sanusi’s role as Emir of Kano.

KanyiDaily recalls that the court had reversed the banishment of Lamido Sanusi Lamido to Nasarawa State where he was expected to spend the rest of his life in exile following his dethronement by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
