President Tinubu Signs Bill Returning Old Nigeria’s National Anthem Into Law

President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill to reinstate the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio announced this during a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Akpabio explained that President Tinubu visited briefly to greet the lawmakers as he was there to commission the National Assembly Library.

The Senate president noted that Tinubu would officially reintroduce the old national anthem during the joint session today.

The old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” is being reinstated in place of “Arise, O Compatriots,” which has been used since 1978.

House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas clarified that Tinubu would not deliver a “state of the nation” address as planned, since today is not officially Democracy Day.

He said, “The president has said that what ever speech we have to give should be shifted to June 12 which is democracy day, so to this effect the president will come flag off the recitation of the new National anthem after giving accent to it and will the after proceed to other important engagement.”

KanyiDaily had reported how a Nigerian singer and actress, Mercy Isoyip, also known as Descushiel, recited the national anthem wrongly during police conference in Owerri, Imo State.
