My Song Led To Creation Of International Awards Category For Afrobeats – Rema [Video]

Nigerian singer, Rema claimed that the recent inclusion of an Afrobeats category at international award shows was influenced by the success of his hit song, “Calm Down.”

During an interview on *The Breakfast Club*, Rema confidently stated that he is on par with Afrobeats icons like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

He said, “I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself.

“Respect to the OGs but yeah, I am one of the Big 4… Something as little as a major award shows creating an Afrobeats category because the success of my song has already opened gates.”

KanyiDaily recalls that the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a Best Afrobeats Song category last year, with Rema’s “Calm Down Remix” featuring Selena Gomez winning the first-ever award.
