Palmeiras had hoped to retain Reis for the upcoming Club World Cup but ultimately agreed to let him join City immediately.
“Vitor Reis is one of the most promising young defenders in the world and we’re delighted to been able to bring him here,” said Txiki Begiristain, the club’s Director of Football.
“In his short time in senior football in Brazil, he has shown he has the ability to go very far in the game and we know that working with Pep and our coaches will help to get the best out of him.”
Vitor Reis, a former Brazil under-17 international, made 18 league appearances for Palmeiras and is regarded as a vital part of Pep Guardiola’s plans to rebuild the team with younger talent.
His signing comes just a day after Man City announced the acquisition of 20-year-old Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens.
Calling the transfer the biggest step in his career, Reis said he couldn’t pass up the opportunity when Manchester City came knocking.
“There wasn’t anywhere else to go,” Reis said. “I’m excited to join Manchester City, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
“Everyone has seen the amazing achievements in recent seasons, and I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies.”
Reis also expressed excitement about working with Pep Guardiola, saying, “Working with Pep Guardiola is something every young player wants to do, and I know he can help me to develop into the best player I can be.”
Before finalizing the transfer, Reis said he sought advice from fellow Brazilian and City teammate Savinho.
“City also have a lot of experience of working with Brazilian footballers and joining the likes of (goalkeeper) Ederson and Savinho in the squad will be a big help to me,” he added.
A versatile defender capable of playing as a centre-back or right-back, Vitor Reis came through Palmeiras’ academy and made his senior debut last June.
His impressive performances had reportedly drawn attention from top European clubs, including Real Madrid.
KanyiDaily recalls that Manchester City also reached an agreement with Lens to sign central defender, Abdukodir Khusanov for €40m (£33.6m).
