Reps Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga Is Dead

The House of Representatives has announced the death of Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip and representative for Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State.

In a statement released in Abuja, House Spokesman Akintunde Rotimi revealed that the lawmaker died yesterday after a brief illness.

Rotimi described Adewunmi Onanuga as an exceptional leader, saying, “She was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a role in which she demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to legislative discipline, particularly during parliamentary sittings.

“She was a dedicated public servant, a visionary leader, and a passionate advocate for her constituents.

“Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ (the late) Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike. Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service.”

Born on December 2, 1965, in Hammersmith, London, to Nigerian parents, Adewunmi Onanuga was both a politician and an entrepreneur. She began serving as Deputy Chief Whip in 2023.

Onanuga joined the House of Representatives in 2019 after winning her seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She also served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the Ninth Assembly, where she played a key role in championing policies aimed at empowering women and promoting social welfare.

KanyiDaily had also reported that Moses Jitoboh, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police and former Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, passed away last month.
