Court Grants ₦2bn Bail To Godwin Emefiele Over 753 Abuja Duplexes Case

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in the sum of ₦2 billion.

Justice Halilu Yusuf issued the ruling on Monday, June 16, after Godwin Emefiele appeared in court over an eight-count charge.

The charges include allegedly acquiring a housing estate with 753 units through illegal means and controlling large sums of money through proxy accounts.

While delivering the bail ruling, the judge noted that Emefiele had already been granted bail in three other cases and had not violated any of those bail terms.

As part of the new bail conditions, Emefiele is required to provide two sureties who each own property worth at least ₦2 billion in either Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2 — all upscale areas in Abuja.

Justice Yusuf also ordered him to hand over his travel documents to the court and directed that he must meet all bail conditions by Wednesday, or he will be taken into custody.

The bail was granted following an application by Emefiele’s lawyer, Matthew Burkaa.

The prosecution, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, did not oppose the bail request but asked the court to add stricter conditions than those in his earlier cases.

KanyiDaily recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently filed new charges against Godwin Emefiele.
