Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, Adesina explained that Buhari had always received his medical care in London, even before becoming president
According to him, Buhari’s survival largely depended on continuing his medical treatment in the UK, rather than using Nigeria’s healthcare syste.
Adesina also admitted that Nigeria didn’t have the kind of medical expertise required to treat Buhari’s condition.
Noting that it’s a matter of necessity, not preference, he argued that sticking with his London doctors is what kept Buhari alive throughout his time in power.
“He always had his medical in London even when he was not in office. So it was not about the time he was President alone. He has always had it in London,” Adesina said.
Femi Adesina added that if Buhari had insisted on getting treated locally, just to prove a point, it might have cost him his life.
He went on to say that critics often miss the bigger picture, noting that the priority was keeping the president healthy enough to lead, not making a symbolic gesture that could have ended tragically.
“And then you have to be alive first, to get certain things corrected in your country. If he had said I would do my medicals in Nigeria just as a show-off or something, he could have long been dead. Because there may not be the experts needed in the country.
“But he needed to be alive to be able to lead the country to a point where we would have that expertise. So those who gullibly talk about going abroad don’t know that a man needs to be alive,” Adesina added.
Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 at a London hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. He will be buried today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
KanyiDaily reported that Muhammadu Buhari’s remains was flown from London to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday morning, ahead of his state burial.
