Adamu Waziri announced his resignation on Monday at his local ward, Dogo Tebo in Potiskum, Yobe State.
According to him, the decision was prompted by pressing national concerns and the current state of the party.
He said the PDP no longer represents what a true opposition party should stand for and criticized its leadership for straying from the party’s original vision.
Waziri noted that PDP’s current direction doesn’t offer members a real alternative or platform to freely exercise their choices during elections.
“I was a member of PDP, and due to the exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign.
“For record purposes. Let it be known that the current leadership and tone of the party are inconsistent with the leadership of a major party that should offer an alternative platform to its members to exercise their inalienable right and freedom of choice in any electoral contest,” he said.
He explained that his resignation followed the party’s constitution, which requires members to formally quit from their local ward.
Calling his exit a tough but necessary step, Waziri said the PDP has lost its sense of purpose and no longer aligns with his political values.
The former minister said he would join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) effective immediately.
Waziri also called on his supporters to follow him in backing a new movement that he believes can offer real leadership and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Meanwhile, Malam Muhammad Bomai, the PDP ward chairman who was present at the event, accepted Waziri’s resignation with sadness, describing him as a strong force in the party.
“Waziri has been an institution within the PDP, and we will feel his absence deeply,” he said.
Bomai also resigned from the PDP and declared his defection to the ADC, saying he shared Waziri’s hopes for a better Nigeria.
KanyiDaily recalls that Abubakar Malami, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, also defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the ADC.
