Mother, Baby, Five Other Family Members Injured As Building Collapses In Abia

A three-storey building under construction collapsed early Saturday morning in the Olokoro Road area of the Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate in Umuahia, Abia State, leaving seven people injured.

It was gathered that the incident happened around 3 a.m. and also destroyed a nearby bungalow that housed a family of seven.

Although no life was lost, some of the victims, including a nursing mother and her five-month-old baby, suffered serious injuries.

According to Vanguard, the victims were pulled from the rubble and rushed to a hospital for treatment.

A resident of the area, Ugwumba Shedrack, said: “The building has been showing signs of collapse for too long. This morning we heard a loud sound around 3am, and the building collapsed. I heard the building belongs to a politician; I don’t know why he abandoned it in that condition.”

Following the collapse, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, visited the scene.

He expressed relief that no lives were lost and confirmed that the agency has sealed off the site.

Agomoh also said an investigation is underway to find out what led to the collapse.

He added that the building’s owner will face legal consequences if found negligent, and that steps will be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

KanyiDaily recalls that Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) recently ordered the demolition of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) parish building in the Somolu area after it was partially damaged by a nearby structure that collapsed during construction.
