Police Arrest Delta Community Head, Four Suspects Over ‘Rαping Festival’ In Ozoro

The Delta State Police Command says it has arrested Omorede Sunday and four others over the alleged rape and assault of young women during a festival in Oruamudhu community, located in Isoko North LGA.

On Thursday, several disturbing videos surfaced online showing groups of men tearing women’s clothes and touching them inappropriately.

In one of the videos, a young woman was seen in tears, trying to cover herself after her clothes were ripped, while some men continued to harass her.

Reports indicate that women were expected to stay indoors from 12pm until the following day as part of the festival rules.

Some social media users claimed that certain youths in the area turned the event into what they described as a “rape festival,” especially since women were not allowed to take part in the activities.

There were also warnings shared in WhatsApp groups linked to students of Southern Delta University in Ozoro, advising female students not to go outside from midday on Thursday.

The videos have triggered widespread anger, with many Nigerians calling on authorities to take action and ensure the safety of women.

Speaking on the development, Bright Edafe said Omorede Sunday, identified as the main organiser of the festival, has been arrested along with four others from the Oramudu area of Ozoro.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police has directed that the suspects be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

The community head and chief organiser of the event, one chief Omorede Sunday and four other suspects from Oramudu quarters in Ozoro have been arrested,” Edafe said.

“The CP has ordered that they should be transferred to State CID with immediate effect. The CP vows that anyone involved will be arrested and brought to justice.”
