He made this known at a Town Square Meeting with residents of Ikono and Ini Federal Constituency in Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, where he frowned at some aides who had described their pay as “stipends.”
The Governor praised his PA on Protocol, Blessed Essien, for using part of his salary to build and reticulate a borehole in his community.
In recognition of this gesture, Umo Eno announced Essien’s promotion to Special Assistant on Public Works.
He said, “I received a brochure about a PA who used part of his earnings to construct and reticulate a borehole in his village. That’s commendable. But others with similar opportunities are not engaging their communities meaningfully.”
The governor stressed that it was important for the public to know the truth about how much political aides earn.
“Let it be clear: no Personal Assistant to the Governor earns less than one million naira monthly. It’s misleading to describe such as a ‘stipend.’ That’s substantial income, and I expect transparency and accountability from all political appointees.” he added.
To further drive accountability, Eno directed the Secretary to the State Government to publish a list of all political appointees, organized by local government areas, in a national newspaper.
The Governor urged citizens to demand more from their representatives, saying, “Ask your PAs, your SAs, SSAs, and Commissioners — what have they done for your communities?”
He concluded that promotions and appointments would be tied to performance, noting that Essien’s elevation was proof that visible impact would be rewarded.
