Nigerians To Pay More As NIS Increases Passport Fees By 100%

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a major increase in passport application fees for Nigerians applying within the country.

A statement released on Thursday by the Service’s spokesperson, A.S. Akinlabi, said the new charges will take effect from September 1, 2025, and represent nearly a 100 percent rise compared to the old rates.

“The review, which only affects Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now sets a new fee threshold for 32-page passports with 5-year validity at N100,000 and 64-page passports with 10-year validity at N200,000.

“Meanwhile, Nigerian Passport Application fees made by Nigerians in diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity,” Akinlabi said.

The NIS explained that the adjustment is aimed at improving service quality while ensuring that passport services remain available to citizens.

The change comes at a time when many Nigerians, especially young people, are seeking opportunities outside the country in what has become popularly known as the “Japa” trend.

The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European countries remain top destinations for those leaving in search of better education, jobs, and security.

Data from the World Bank in 2023 showed that Nigerians living abroad send back more than $20 billion annually, making the diaspora community one of the country’s biggest sources of foreign inflows.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Bola Tinubu approved an extension for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, allowing her to remain in office until December 31, 2026.
