In recent weeks, reports have suggested that some PDP leaders are reaching out to Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, with the hope of fielding him as the PDP’s candidate in 2027.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro have both confirmed that efforts are ongoing to convince Obi to return.
But speaking during a media chat on Monday, September 1, Wike described the idea as “dangerous and hypocritical,” insisting that the PDP has refused to learn from the mistakes that cost it the 2023 elections.
He recalled warning his colleagues last year when both the party’s presidential ticket and the national chairmanship went to the North.
According to him, such an arrangement was unfair, politically reckless, and partly responsible for the PDP’s defeat at the polls.
“From day one, I told my colleagues, PDP, you are shooting yourself. If you allow what is going on to continue, you’ll pay. And what did I say? You cannot have the presidential candidate at the same time as the national chairman of the party,” he stated.
Nyesom Wike accused the party of mishandling its internal politics, saying its actions stripped it of credibility and balance.
The minister, who emphasized that power should rotate back to the South in the interest of fairness, argued that welcoming Obi solely for political ambition would erode the PDP’s principles and ideology.
“Bringing Obi to where? You want to k!ll the party the more? Some of these people don’t have character. Obi that was abusing the party? That the party is rotten…so the party is good for you to come and run? These people’s ambition can even make you to go to satan’s house.
“If you want to destroy this party, dare to bring Peter Obi. Let Peter Obi come….There is nowhere he wouldn’t go because of ambition. Can’t we be principled? Because we are looking for President” he said.
KanyiDaily recalls that PDP recently described Peter Obi as a major political figure whose return could strengthen the party’s chances in future elections.
