The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa Government House.
However, Douye Diri did not disclose which political party he plans to join next.
His resignation reportedly has the backing of 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker.
Diri’s spokesperson, Daniel Alabra, confirmed the development to Premium Times on Tuesday, October 15.
“He has resigned from the PDP, yes. But he has not joined any other party yet,” Alabra said.
Before his exit, Diri was one of the few remaining PDP governors in Nigeria’s South-South region, following Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June.
With Diri’s resignation, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is now the only PDP governor left in the region.
His departure reduces the number of PDP governors across the country to eight in Rivers, Adamawa, Bauchi, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Zamfara states.
Duoye Diri’s defection came 24 hours after Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also dumped the PDP for the APC.
