This new fund is expected to support the growth of sports in the state and create long-term financial backing for athletes and sporting facilities.
During a visit from the Osun chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, explained that the state government is committed to giving the Osogbo Township Stadium a major upgrade.
According to him, the ongoing renovation will be completed as soon as possible so the stadium can meet international standards and host major competitions.
Adewusi noted that Davido accepted the appointment “without hesitation,” stressing that the singer’s worldwide popularity and strong connections will help the state attract sponsors and investors who can contribute to sports development in Osun.
He also revealed that plans to establish the Osun State Sports Commission are already in motion. This commission will oversee all sports-related policies and activities within the state.
Adewusi added that the Sports Trust Fund is a key step toward securing regular funding from supporters and organizations both inside and outside Osun.
He said, “Ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to meet Olympic standards — a project that will be completed in the shortest possible time.
“I am pleased to inform you that plans are in advanced stages towards the establishment of the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as a central body for sports administration, development, and policy implementation.
“Introduction of a Sports Trust Fund to attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development.
“Davido has been contacted and informed that he would be appointed as Chairman the Sports Trust Fund, and he did not hesitate in accepting the appointment. His intervention would attract funds that would impact Osun sports positively.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Davido recently inaugurated a new female hostel named after his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, at Clifford University in Abia State.
