Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Dumps NNPP Amid Speculations To Join APC

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The decision was made public by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who presented Yusuf’s resignation letter to party officials.

According to him, the governor said his decision was driven by ongoing internal conflicts in the NNPP and his desire to act in the best interest of the people of Kano.

Yusuf’s resignation letter was addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, and was dated to take effect from January 23, 2026.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,.

“This decision takes effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” the Governor stated in the letter.

Governor Abba Yusuf thanked the party for the support and opportunity it gave him since he joined in 2022.

“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party,” he said.

Yusuf explained that persistent leadership disputes and several unresolved court cases within the party had created deep divisions and weakened unity at both the state and national levels.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination,” the Governor noted.

According to him, these problems have left many party members feeling sidelined and uncertain about the party’s future.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels,” Yusuf said.

He said the decision to leave was taken after careful thought and was not motivated by anger or personal grievances.

After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he declared.

Yusuf stressed that his move was guided solely by public interest and his commitment to peace, unity, and the development of Kano State.

This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” the Governor added

The governor is reported to have left the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen in the state.

Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the governor’s concerns about the internal crisis within the party.

He said the party had no choice but to accept Yusuf’s resignation, describing him as one of the most successful governors produced by the NNPP.

Zubairu said. “Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP.”

He praised Yusuf’s performance in areas such as infrastructure, urban development, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.

Although Governor Yusuf has not publicly declared his next political move, there is widespread speculation that he may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

KanyiDaily recalls that Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP national leader, recently denied claims that he supported the alleged plan by Governor Abba Yusuf, to defect to the APC.
