Ex-President’s Daughter Iyabo Obasanjo Confirms Membership In APC

Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has confirmed that she is now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.

She made this known on Saturday during a radio interview with football icon Segun Odegbami on Eagle7 Sports 103.7FM in Abeokuta.

Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the APC as the party where she feels most at home.

She said her return to active politics came after years of encouragement from supporters who had been urging her to come back.

As I told you, a group of people whom I did not bring together, I did not form them into a group, have been working, I think, for two years now.

” And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she said.

Obasanjo-Bello explained that going back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which she previously contested, was not an option because of the party’s ongoing internal problems.

She said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was also considered, but she was unsure about how prepared the party was.

She noted that many of those pushing for her political comeback are APC members, which also influenced her decision.

The ex-president’s daughter said after wide consultations, she decided to officially join the ruling party.

So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or any group within the APC. I feel comfortable with all the actors I know within the APC.

“I feel more comfortable, actually, than with some of the actors I know in the PDP, and some of them are now in the ADC. So I think it’s my natural home. I feel quite confident and happy to have made that decision.

“I have an absolute 100 per cent feeling it’s my natural home,” she said.

Although the APC has not released an official statement about her membership, her move signals a return to politics after about 15 years away.

Her decision comes ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State, with growing speculation that she may contest the governorship.

Reports indicate that she recently completed the APC e-registration process in Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government Area, confirming her entry into the party.

Obasanjo-Bello served as senator representing Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011. Before that, she was commissioner for health under former governor Gbenga Daniel.

She lost her second-term bid in 2011 and later returned to the United States, where she focused on academics and eventually became a professor.

Meanwhile, the APC has denied claims that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 election.
