During an appearance on Channels Television on March 5, Reno Omokri said he had never seen or heard Tinubu promise to deliver 24-hour electricity to Nigerians during the 2022 campaign.
The programme’s host, Seun Okinbaloye, reminded him of a statement attributed to Tinubu, in which the president said voters should not support him for another term if he failed to provide round-the-clock electricity within four years.
When asked whether Nigerians should hold the president accountable for that pledge, Omokri said he was unaware that such a statement had been made and claimed he had not seen any video showing Tinubu making the promise.
“I’m not aware the president said that, I haven’t seen any video where the president said that,” Omokri said.
He later suggested that Tinubu might have made the remark without fully understanding the challenges within the country’s electricity system.
According to Omokri, the president was likely speaking as someone outside the federal government at the time and may not have been aware of the complexities of the sector.
“When he said that, maybe he was contesting, and didn’t know what was in government. The Nigerian power sector has been privatised, and there’s very little the president can do,” he added in defense of Tinubu, whose administration appears to lack any coherent plan on fixing the country’s power sector.
Reno Omokri said the only major part of the sector still under government control is the transmission network, which he believes should also be privatised.
