Okey Bakassi Offers ₦5m Bounty To Identify Phone Thief At Football Match In Lagos

Nigerian comedian Okey Bakassi has promised a ₦5 million reward to anyone who can help recover phones stolen during a  football game in Ikoyi, Lagos.

He shared the update in a video on Instagram on Thursday, explaining that an unfamiliar man joined their regular Wednesday evening football session.

According to him, the group allowed the man to play out of goodwill.

Okey Bakassi said the man took part briefly before claiming he was injured and stepping off the pitch.

While others were focused on the game, the suspect reportedly used the moment to steal several phones and flee.

He stated that about eight phones were taken, many belonging to businessmen who rely on them for daily work.

He said, “This evening, 15th of April 2026, where we play football every Wednesday evening in Ikoyi, a young man came to play with us. Out of our own kindness, we allowed him to join us.”

“He played for a little bit and feigned injury, went to the stands to sit. While we were carried away playing football, this criminal carted away people’s phones. Took about eight handsets and disappeared.

The comedian also predicted that the suspect might try to sell the devices quickly at low prices.

He added that the case has already been reported to the police, and efforts are underway to trace the suspect, though details are being kept private.

Okey Bakassi also sent a message directly to the alleged thief, giving him 24 hours to return the phones to the security post where they were taken.

If you’re the one who came out this evening to play with us and you feel that the way to pay us back is to cart away phones and vanish, we will find you. It will only take time.

“In your best interest, you have the next 24 hours to return those phones back to the security post where you took them from,” he said.

Bakassi encouraged anyone with phone-tracking skills to reach out to him, noting that the ₦5 million reward would go to anyone who helps locate any of the stolen devices.

For everyone else who knows how to track phones, contact me in my DM. There’s a five million naira waiting for whoever can track any one of those phones,” he added.

He further advised people who buy used phones to be careful and always request proper identification from sellers to avoid ending up with stolen items.

The incident has drawn attention online, with many people raising concerns about security, even in what are meant to be controlled recreational environments.
