Weak Opposition Will Hurt Nigeria’s Democracy – Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged opposition parties in Nigeria to stay united, warning that a weak opposition could harm the country’s democratic system.

He made this known on Saturday while speaking at a gathering of opposition leaders held in Ibadan.

The meeting was organised to improve cooperation among political parties.

The event took place at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House and brought together members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), along with other groups.

Addressing attendees, Makinde explained that the purpose of the meeting was not to create conflict or division, but to encourage responsible political participation.

He said, “If we allow opposition to weaken, whether by design or by neglect, then we all bear the consequences.

“So this is not a movement for fragmentation, it is not a movement for violence, and it is certainly not a movement to disengage politically.”

Seyi Makinde said the aim is to encourage honest discussions and responsible actions that go beyond party interests, stressing the need to put the country first.

It is a movement to think clearly, to speak honestly, and to act with a sense of responsibility that goes beyond party lines,” he said.

He also pointed out that Nigeria is currently facing serious economic and security challenges, which require political leaders to work together and speak openly.

So I welcome you to Ibadan, and I wish us a successful deliberation.Thank you, and God bless you,” he said.

The summit, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” was described by organisers as an effort to address growing concerns about governance, insecurity, and the state of the economy.
