The controversy began after the impersonating account claimed that Plumptre had been left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The page further alleged that some officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) demanded a bribe from the defender and she decided to distance herself from the national team because of the incident.
The post quickly attracted attention online, with many users reacting to the claims made by the Facebook page, which carries a verification badge, and currently has more than 2,000 followers.
However, Ashleigh Plumptre moved to clear the air on Tuesday via her official Instagram page, which has over 130,000 followers.
The 28-year-old footballer stated that the Facebook account does not belong to her and warned fans against believing any information posted on the page.
She also appealed to her supporters to help report the account so that it could be removed from the platform.
Plumptre was born in Leicester, England, but chose to represent Nigeria at the international level in 2021 through her Nigerian heritage from her grandfather.
Since joining the Super Falcons, she has become an important member of the squad and played a key role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2025 WAFCON, where the team secured its 10th continental title.
