Lionel Messi Becomes Highest Goalscorer In World Cup History

Argentine captain Lionel Messi has written his name into the history books after becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

The 38-year-old  reached the milestone on Monday, June 22, after scoring twice in his side’s 2-0 win over Austria.

His latest brace took his World Cup total to 18 goals, moving him ahead of former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who held the previous record with 16 goals.

Messi had already matched Klose’s tally after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Algeria.

The 38-year-old opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a superb curling effort from the edge of the penalty area, giving Argentina the lead in their second group game.

Earlier in the match, Messi had the chance to score from the penalty spot after Lautaro Martinez was brought down inside Austria’s box, but the veteran forward sent his effort wide.

He eventually made amends deep into stoppage time, finding the net again to secure the victory and confirm Argentina’s place in the Round of 32.

At the moment, the only active player with a realistic chance of challenging Messi’s record is France forward Kylian Mbappe, who has scored 14 World Cup goals.

Several other legendary players feature on the all-time scoring chart.

Brazil icon Ronaldo Nazario finished his World Cup career with 15 goals, while Germany great Gerd Muller scored 14.

Football legends Pele and Just Fontaine are also among the tournament’s most prolific scorers.

Lionel Messi is currently appearing in his sixth World Cup, a feat matched only by Cristiano Ronaldo and Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
