‘Terrorists may ruin the holidays by attacking Lagos hotels’ – US government

Ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr holidays, the American government has warned its citizens in Nigeria to beware of terrorist attacks.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria issued the warning today urging Americans to ‘take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.’

The mission ‘advises that groups associated with terrorist activity might be planning attacks against hotels in Lagos frequented by international visitors, including those located on waterfronts, during the Eid-al-Fitr holidays (5 and 6 July 2016),’ the statement reads.

‘The U.S. Mission in Nigeria reminds you to review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates.

‘Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

It’s not the first time the US would warn its citizens living outside America of such attacks. Such warnings usually come ahead of festive seasons during which terrorists may want to launch attacks as people let their guards down.

Nigeria’s secret service issued a similar warning days ago of possible terrorist attacks in the country.

The warnings would be taken seriously as suspected terrorists recently attacked a spot near Prophet Muhammed’s tomb in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Terrorists were also believed to be behind the recent attack at Turkey airport.

Americans and Nigerians would do well to take their personal security seriously this season and beyond and avoid hotels.
