Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde Sacks Commissioner Who Spent 52 Days Treating Coronavirus

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has sacked his Commissioner for Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Prof. Raphael Afonja.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2020, by Taiwo Adisa, the chief press secretary to the governor.

According to the statement, Afonja was “sacked with immediate effect” in a letter signed by the secretary to the state government (SSG) Olubamiwo Adeosun.

Though the reason for the commissioner’s sack was not officially stated in the letter, but Afonja had earlier announced that he spent 52 days treating COVID-19 in isolation on a radio programme.

The commissioner who recently tested negative for coronavirus had hoped to resume work just before his appointment was in the letter dated on Monday, August 10.

“I wish to convey the approval of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, on the termination of your appointment as Honourable Commissioner with immediate effect,” the statement reads.

“Consequent upon the above development, you are hereby directed to hand over all the government items in your possession to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Infrastructure and Transport.

“I am to add that your contribution within the time of your sojourn is appreciated and commendable, and therefore, wish you successes in your future endeavours. I thank you.”

The redeployment of two state commissioners was also approved by Governor Makinde who asked that they swap portfolios with immediate effect.

The commissioner of special duties, Bayo Lawal was moved to the state’s ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs, while Funmilayo Orisadeyi who held the previous position was given Lawal’s role (special duties).

KanyiDaily had also reported how Governor Wike sacked official who published report on the coronavirus in Rivers State without first getting his approval.
