The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Anambra State governorship election till Sunday 7th November 2021.
INEC stated that this is to enable those who could not vote on Saturday due to the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BIVAS) machine to do so after reports that the machine failed to work in many polling units.
While speaking to the press at the INEC office in Awka, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, said the materials did not arrive on time at some polling units because some drivers and ad-hoc staff failed to turn up.
Regarding the machine malfunction, he said that the commission’s engineers were working to rectify the software hitches.
However, he disclosed that the time for voting to be closed in the state has been shifted from 2.30 pm to 4 pm today, after which the exercise will continue on Sunday in units where voting could not hold.
In other news, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nkem Okeke after casting his vote, the deputy governor displayed his ballot paper to the camera while debunking rumours that he had returned to the APGA. He said;
“I had to reveal my ballot paper because they have been rumors that I had defected back to APGA, but that is not true. You just saw that I voted for my party, APC.”
