Nigerian Navy Arrests Popular Comedian, Cute Abiola Over Social Media Post

Nigerian Navy has confirmed the arrest of comedian, Cute Abiola, who was declared missing by his family.

The Nigerian Navy has arrested a Naval officer and Instagram Comedian, Ahmed Gafar, popularly known as Cute Abiola, for violating and breaching Armed Forces of Nigeria social media policy.

The Director of Information, Navy Headquarters, Commodore Suleman Dahun disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, while reacting to the report that the popular comedian had gone missing.

Cute Abiola had been declared missing by his wife and friends after left his house for the office at Navy Town at about 6am on Monday, November 15, 2021 and got to the office at about 7am.

Another comedian, Debo Adedayo better known as Mr Macaroni, had raised alarm on Tuesday over Abiola’s whereabouts after his wife revealed that she last communicated with him after he arrived at the Navy office.

Macaroni had wrote, “I have just received news that Cute Abiola is missing. If the Nigerian Navy has any information to help Cute Abiola’s family and friends confirm his whereabouts or if he his in their custody, I think the honorable thing to do would be to clarify details surrounding his detention and put everyone’s mind at rest. Haba!”

Nigerian Navy Confirms Arrest Of Cute Abiola

Reacting to the development on Wednesday, the Nigerian Navy revealed that it detained Cute Abiola and he is not missing as widely reported.

Commodore Suleman Dahun said that Abiola was taken into custody for violating social media policy which prohibits Navy personnel from posting pictures of themselves or of their colleagues in military uniform.

The statement reads: “Cute Abiola is not missing !!! He is in custody for breaching Armed Forces Social Media Policy.

”The young man was found to have breached the social media policy while he was on leave. So he was recalled, asked to come back, but he refused until he completed his leave which is a disobedience to particular orders”.

The Armed Forces Act 2017 provides guidelines on social media use to curb undignified use of social media by members of the Armed Forces, especially acts that could render them susceptible to enemies’ trap or jeopardise ongoing military operations.

“Personnel should not post their pictures or those of their colleagues in military uniforms, or pictures containing military structures, platforms and other military related items.”

“Personnel will be held liable for any security issues arising from postings in respect of them by civilian friends or relations. They are therefore, to educate their friends and relations as necessary regarding military security and what should not be posted on social media,” the guideline says in part.
