Grammys 2022: Wizkid, Femi Kuti And His Son Made Kuti Loses To Angelique Kidjo

Wizkid lost both categories he was nominated at the 2022 Grammys.

Beninese legendary singer, Angelique Kidjo has defeated Nigerian artists including Wizkid, Femi Kui, and his son, Made Kuti, who were nominated for the 64th edition of the 2022 Grammy Awards.

Wizkid Loses Both Grammy Nominations

The Nigerian superstar was nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category, recognizing new vocal or instrumental Global music recordings.

He also received a second nomination in the Best Global Music Album category for albums containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental Global Music recordings.

However, the singer lost both nominations as the Best Global Music Performance award was won by Arooj AftabMohabbat, while Angelique Kidjo, Mother Nature, won the Best Global Music Album category.

Wizkid’s loss comes as a surprise to many who had predicted a double win for the singer in both categories following the success of his hit single ‘Essence’ and album ‘Made In Lagos’.

Angelique Kidjo Beats Wizkid, Femi Kuti, Made Kuti

At the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas today, Sunday, April 3, the Beninese singer won her fifth Grammy Awards in the Best Global Music album category.

Kidjo, who was nominated alongside Wizkid, Femi Kuti, and Made Kuti, appreciated young Africans that have continued to collaborate with her to promote the continent to the world.

During her acceptance speech, the legendary singer thanked the Nigerian artistes who featured in the album, including Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Mr. Eazi.

Angélique‘s fifth Grammy award ablum ‘Mother Nature’ was worked on by several Producers such as Kel P of (Burna Boy), James Poyser of The Roots, Vtek, Rexxie, Synematik, Blue Lab Beats, -M-, Brad Thomas Ackley, David Donatien and Dany Synthé.

KanyiDaily recalls that in 2021, Burna Boy bagged the Grammy award in the ‘Best Global Album’ category, while Wizkid won a Grammy for the Best Music Video’ for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl’, a 2019 song by American pop singer, Beyonce.

Burna Boy was nominated in the same category in 2019 – then known as Best World Music Album – but lost out to Angelique Kidjo at the awards ceremony in 2020.
