SSANU, NASU Suspend Strike After Two Months

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) have suspended their ongoing strike.

NASU, SSANU Ends Strike

It was gathered that the unions suspended the strike on Saturday after meeting with Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, in Abuja.

SSANU’s national president, Muhammed Ibrahim in an interview with Punch on Saturday, confirmed that the industrial action has been suspended after two months.

“Yes, we have suspended the strike for a period of two months”, Ibrahim said.

It is understood that the suspension is expected to take effect from Wednesday.

Just like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has been on strike for six months, SSANU and NASU had also embarked on industrial action.

The unions had called for the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, payment of earned allowances, usurpation of non-academic career positions by vice-chancellors, the inclusion of university staff school into the university community, non-payment of minimum wage arrears, and funding of state universities.

A committee set up by the Federal Government and headed by the Emeritus Professor, Nimi Briggs had engaged in negotiations with the two unions.

The strike by SSANU and NASU has led to suspension in the issuance of academic transcripts; mobilisation of graduates for the compulsory one year service organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Meanwhile, ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the government’s failure to meet its demands bordering on the funding of universities as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers.
