20 Nigerian Universities To Embark On ASUU Strike After 14-Day Ultimatum [Full List]

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has approved strike action by branches at 20 Nigerian universities over the delayed implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.

It was gathered that the affected branches have been instructed to give their university authorities 14 days to meet their demands before embarking on industrial action if the issues are not resolved within that period.

The decision was reached at ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed the resolutions in a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026.

“Consequently, NEC resolved that permission be granted to the following branches that have approached NEC for an action, to institute the procedures to embark on strike in order to press home their demands. This is to be preceded by the issuance of a 14-day ultimatum,” Piwuna stated.

The universities include Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Gombe State University; Plateau State University; Adekunle Ajasin University; Adeyemi Federal University of Education; Abia State University; Imo State University; Niger Delta University; and Taraba State University.

Others are the University of Africa, Toru-Orua; Bayelsa Medical University; Ambrose Alli University; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology; University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa; Emmanuel Alayande University of Education; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology; and Northwest University, Kano.

According to ASUU, the action was necessary because of delays in implementing the 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.

The union also raised concerns about several state-owned universities that have yet to implement the agreement.

The ASUU president directed the affected branches to take action once their 14-day deadlines expire if their demands remain unresolved.

Branches in the Sokoto Zone had already issued similar two-week ultimatums, according to the union.

Meanwhile, ASUU chapters at Nasarawa State University and Imo State University have already begun indefinite strikes over their unresolved demands.
