Bishop Arogundade speaks on how Nigerian constitution might hinder Tinubu’s presidency

The Catholic Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Revd. Jude Arogundade, indicated over the weekend that the 1999 Constitution will be the biggest problem for President-elect Bola Tinubu when he takes office on May 29.

Arogundade, who stated that the constitution was the final guide a country needed to navigate it smoothly, stated that it was under trial and pointed out that it had numerous flaws.

The Catholic Bishop declared during a church service conducted at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Akure, Ondo State, to honor this year’s World Communications Day that the constitution has been treated as useless for so long.

The theme for the 57th World Communication Day is “Speaking with the Heart, the Truth in Love,” and the Bishop also challenged Nigerians and the incoming administration to focus on how to build a new nation where every life matters, as well as a rapid amendment to the constitution for a better nation.

“I don’t know how we can have free and fair elections under a constitution that isn’t free and fair,” he added. We disagree on everything in this country, and at the end of the day, when you think about it, it is not the INEC that is on trial, it is not the APC that is on trial, and it is not even all of the political parties who are on trial. What is on trial, though, is Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

“If we want to talk about rigged elections, we must first discuss the rigged constitution; if we want to talk about Nigeria, we must first discuss the amalgamation.”

“I don’t know how we can have a country where the citizens are suffering, which is why we must first have a nation.”
