Seun Kuti Appointed ‘General Overseer’ By Inmates, Leads Prayer Sessions In Prison

Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti has been appointed the ‘General Overseer’ at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

KanyiDaily recalls that Yaba Chief Magistrate Court had remanded Seun Kuti in prison after he surrendered himself to the police for assaulting an officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

According to Vanguard, Seun Kuti was placed in a cell with other suspected criminals. His arrival initially caused an uproar among the inmates, who banged on their protective door and demanded his removal.

Sources said that Seun sought to restore peace and harmony. Realizing that the commotion attracted little attention from the police guards, he promised to provide ₦25,000 to the inmates as a gesture of goodwill.

He was said to have urgently contacted his wife for the money, which was promptly delivered and handed over to the leader of the inmates. Subsequently, the inmates accepted Seun and allocated him a space to sit.

It was gathered that Seun was deeply infuriated by the incident that he refused to eat the food provided for him, including meals brought by his wife. He embarked on a hunger strike that lasted for nearly a day and a half before he eventually started eating.

The climax of the drama was that the inmates later appointed Seun Kuti as the ‘General Overseer’ of his cell and presented him with a copy of the Holy Bible to symbolize his new position.

Despite initial resistance due to his appointment, Seun currently leads the inmates in prayer sessions whenever necessary, and they respond with chants of “GO, GO.”

During a visit to the Panti Department on Friday afternoon, Seun was seen tightly clutching the Bible with his left hand while ascending the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara. Later, he descended the stairs and returned to his cell.

Sources revealed that Seun has received visits from his elder brother, Femi Kuti, other family members, lawyers, and some friends.

This comes a day after the police secured an order from a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos to remand the Seun Kuti for additional four days to enable further investigation into the case.
