It’s worth noting that the Grammys introduced the “Best African Music Performance” category in June. This category encompasses a wide range of contemporary and traditional music styles from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, and more.
During a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Burna Boy expressed a sense of responsibility for the inception of the African music category.
The singer, whose album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the “Best Global Music Album’ category at the 63rd Grammy Awards, also expressed his appreciation for the acknowledgment of African music,
Burna Boy, however, wondered whether the newly intoduced “Best African Music Performance” category would hold significant prestige or be a mere consolation prize.
He said, “I do feel somewhat responsible for the new ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I’m waiting to see.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Burna Boy recently lost his two nominations for some categories – Best Global Song Performance and Best Global Album – during the 2023 Grammy awards.
