House Of Reps Summon Naira Marley Over Mohbad’s Music Royalties

The House of Representatives has summoned rapper Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, as part of its efforts to address concerns regarding the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely recognized as Mohbad, and to safeguard his rights.

The House, represented by its Committee on Justice, Youth, and Legislative Compliance, has also extended an invitation to Jiggy Adeoye, Mohbad’s manager, for an interactive session scheduled for October 3.

This proactive step is taken with the aim of securing proper compensation and royalties for Mohbad. He was a former artist signed to Naira Marley’s record label and tragically passed away at the age of 27 under unclear circumstances on September 12.

The House’s involvement in this matter was triggered by a motion presented by Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos), calling for a review of laws related to the entertainment industry and copyright.

Concerns were raised about the contracts and agreements that artists often have to sign.

During the debate at the plenary session on September 26, lawmakers expressed their dedication to ensuring that Mohbad receives rightful compensation and royalties for his musical works.

The Hose of Reps also committed to overseeing the ongoing investigation into Mohbad’s death and the royalties owed to him.

In a letter dated October 26, signed by the Committee’s Clerk, Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim, the House formally summoned Naira Marley and Mohbad’s manager to provide insights into the situation, guiding the committee in potential legislative actions.

This communication was sent through the President of the Performing Musicians Associations of Nigeria.
