Political Commentator Dan Shagamu Found Dead In Kano Home

Ibrahim Khalil, a political commentator known on social media as Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his residence in Gaida, within the Kano metropolis.

Dan Shagamu was reportedly discovered in a pool of blood at his home on Wednesday, September 9.

Amnesty International condemned the killing, saying the commentator was violently attacked and killed after his assailants overpowered him.

The human rights group urged the Nigerian authorities to carry out a full investigation and ensure that everyone involved in the killing is arrested and prosecuted.

“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” the statement reads.

“We are seriously concerned that the Nigerian Government is doing very little to prevent widespread killings, threats, intimidations and other serious human rights violations — within and outside the context of upcoming elections.

“As the elections approach, we continue to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation.”

Reacting to the incident, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf ordered security agencies to track down and arrest those behind the killing.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, said Yusuf described the incident as shocking and unacceptable.

Yusuf called for a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding Khalil’s death and directed the relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible face justice.

Governor Yusuf extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and associates of the deceased, praying Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest,” the statement reads.

“He urged the people of Kano State to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring them that the government would continue to work with security agencies to protect lives and property across the state.

“The Governor further directed the relevant security agencies, particularly the Kano State Commands of the DSS and Nigeria Police, to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, stressing that no individual or group would be allowed to take the law into their hands.”
