Ex-Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich Loses Third Attempt To Overturn EU Eanctions

A European Union court has dismissed Roman Abramovich’s latest attempt to have sanctions imposed on him over Russia’s war in Ukraine removed.

The EU General Court ruled on Wednesday against the Russian billionaire, who formerly owned Chelsea Football Club and is known to have close links to the Kremlin.

Abramovich was placed under the EU’s asset freeze and travel restrictions in 2022, shortly after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

In his latest legal challenge, Abramovich argued that the EU was targeting him because of his public profile.

However, the court rejected the claim and ruled that there were valid grounds for keeping him on the sanctions list.

The court pointed to his financial interests in Russian metals companies Evraz and Norilsk Nickel.

It said the businesses provided “a substantial source of revenue” for the Russian government.

This is Roman Abramovich’s third unsuccessful legal challenge against the EU sanctions. His previous cases were dismissed in 2023 and 2025.

Abramovich is among several wealthy Russian businessmen who have taken legal action in an effort to have EU sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine lifted.
