Tears as Lagos State Government demolish illegal estates built on canals and waterways in Ikota

The Lagos State government in the last 48 hours, enforced the demolition order served to occupants of illegal structures built on canals and waterways along Gedegede – Mobil road – Megamound Estate – Ikota drainage channels.

The state government issued several notices to the residents starting from 2020 to vacate the residents. The last notice was issued to them a few days ago before the demolition was enforced.

Speaking about the incident, the Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State Mr Tokunbo Wahab said;

Earlier today, I led the Permanent Secretaries and other Directors of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to an on-the-spot assessment of the ongoing demolition of illegal structures built on canals and waterways along Gedegede – Mobil road – Ikota drainage channel of Lekki Phase 2 and VGC. The state government has retriated its commitment to ensuring flood free communities across the state. However, the realization of the Nigeria we dream of lies in our hands. It is imperative that we collectively change our attitudes and take responsibility for protecting our environment.

Meanwhile, the homeowners are claiming that government officials gave approval for them to build. They also said they paid millions of Naira to the government and just a few years later, another set of government officials came to demolish their property claiming it was built on a canal path.
